Gum disease is a serious infection that can affect individuals of all ages. When it sets in, deep gum cleaning is a terrific way to correct the disease and halt its progression, restoring the healthy mouth you deserve.
What’s the difference between deep cleaning and a regular cleaning?
Your routine cleaning at the dentist is very different from a deep cleaning. In general, a regular cleaning involves removing plaque and tarter and polishing the front of your teeth. With a deep cleaning, our dental hygienists will also target areas that are impossible to reach at home, including below your gum line. In many cases, we will also combine this deep cleaning with gum irrigation, which involves using special rinses and antibiotics to eliminate the bacteria that’s responsible for gum disease.
Do you need deep gum cleaning?
During your routine dental examination and cleaning in our Carson office, Dr. Barkhordar will evaluate the health of your gums. During this exam, he’s mainly looking for gum pockets, which are deep spaces that develop in between the gums and the teeth, providing a prime area for tarter and plaque to accumulate.
To identify these pockets, he will use a probe to measure the depth of gum tissue in between your teeth and gums. Healthy gums have a measurement of 1 to 3mm. If you have pockets that are larger than that, Dr. Barkhordar will likely recommend a deep gum cleaning to clear away debris. In this way, he can reverse any damage that has already occurred and prevent further decay.
If you do in fact suffer from gum pockets and signs of gum disease, it’s important to receive immediate professional treatment. If left to progress on its own, these issues can result in serious complications, including permanent tooth and bone loss.
What to expect during your deep cleaning
Also known as scaling and root planing, the entire deep cleaning treatment will be performed in the comfort of Dr. Barkhordar’s Carson office. To prevent you from experiencing any discomfort during the cleaning, we will administer local anesthesia to numb the area. From there, one of our warm and friendly dental hygienists will begin by scaling the teeth with an ultrasonic instrument, removing plaque and tarter from the teeth and the gum pockets. Once your scaling is complete, we will begin the root planing portion of the treatment. For this process, the dental hygienist will use a special tool to remove plaque and tarter from the roots of your teeth.
How to care for your gums after treatment
To prevent gum disease and inflammation from recurring, it’s critical that you continue to care for your teeth and gums at home. This will involve twice daily brushing, routine flossing and following any other instructions Dr. Barkhordar provides. Depending on your overall oral health and unique risk factors, he may also advise you to visit our Carson office more frequently than twice a year for periodontal maintenance that can manage the decay.
