Dental Bridges

A reliable way to replace missing teeth, a dental bridge involves using a prosthetic to replace your missing tooth, and placing crowns on the healthy teeth on either side of the gap to anchor the restoration. In this way, a dental bridge is designed to create a beautiful, stable and long-lasting new smile.

Benefits of dental bridges

When you restore your teeth with a dental bridge at our Carson office, the procedure comes with a variety of benefits. Not only will it give you a more attractive and healthy smile, but it will also:

  1. Improve the appearance of your entire face
  2. Correct any issues with your bite
  3. Prevent damage that can occur due to an improper bite
  4. Create durable and long-lasting results

Types of dental bridges

At Dr. Barkhordar’s Carson office, he offers three distinct types of dental bridges. During your initial consultation, he will weigh the pros and cons of each option, and help you determine which one is in your best interest.

The most popular and commonly used option is the traditional bridge. It involves replacing your missing tooth with a prosthetic attached to a dental implant, and placing crowns on the adjacent healthy teeth to support the restoration.

There’s also the Maryland bonded bridge, which is known as a resin-bonded bridge. With this option, Dr. Barkhordar will still use a prosthetic and a dental implant to replace your missing tooth, but he’ll place resin wings on the healthy teeth on either side of the bridge, rather than crowns. The wings require less alterations to your healthy teeth when compared to crowns, making this a slightly less intensive option.

The final option is the cantilever bridge. With this procedure, the restoration will be supported by a crown on only one adjacent tooth. Because there is less support, it’s a more delicate procedure and thus is not recommended if you’re replacing teeth in the back of your mouth.

What to expect during the dental bridge procedure

You can expect your dental bridge procedure to span several months, as it’s a fairly comprehensive, multi-step process. Your first appointment at our Carson office will be dedicated to preparing your mouth for the treatment. To begin, Dr. Barkhordar will prepare the adjacent teeth to receive the crowns by carefully reshaping them. He will then take impressions of your mouth so your custom bridge can be created. While that process is taking place, we will provide you with a temporary prosthetic that will protect your mouth, prevent damage to the surrounding teeth and restore your cosmetic appearance while you wait for your final restoration.

From there, Dr. Barkhordar will begin the process of placing your dental implants. First, he will ensure that you possess enough bone volume to support the implants by taking x-rays and a CT scan of the jaw. From there, he will numb your mouth, create incisions in your gum tissue and place your titanium implant posts. Your mouth will then heal for approximately four to six months, during which time the implants will fuse to the underlying bone and create the solid foundation necessary to support the final bridge.

Once your mouth has fully healed, it will be time for you to return to our Carson office to receive your bridge. During that appointment, Dr. Barkhordar will attach your prosthetic tooth to the implant before placing the crowns on the adjacent teeth, creating the permanently beautiful smile you deserve.
