A dental crown is essentially a cap that’s placed over an imperfect tooth. In this way, it restores the structure’s shape, size and strength – giving you a durable and more beautiful smile.
Why are dental crowns placed?
Dr. Barkhordar may recommend dental crowns for a number of reasons, including:
To enhance your cosmetic appearance
When a crown is placed on your tooth, it covers any flaws and imperfections, improving it’s shape, color and/or alignment.
To strengthen your tooth
If your tooth is compromised, broken or worn down, a dental crown can repair and strengthen the structure.
To support a dental bridge
If you’re replacing a missing tooth with a dental bridge, crowns will be placed on either side of the gap to create a strong foundation for the repair.
To protect a tooth
If Dr. Barkhordar determines your tooth is at a heightened risk for breakage, a crown can protect the structure.
What to expect during your procedure
Your dental crown will be placed over the span of two visits to Dr. Barkhordar’s Carson office. During the first visit, he will focus on preparing your tooth for the crown. To begin, he’ll collect x-rays to evaluate the surrounding bone and roots of the tooth to look for signs of decay, infection or injury. If he finds anything, a root canal may be necessary first.
From there, he will numb your tooth and the surrounding gum tissue to minimize discomfort during the procedure. He will then file down the tooth to create ample room for the crown. How much tooth is filed away will depend on the type of crown you’re having placed. For example, metal crowns require less tooth removal, while porcelain and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns require more. Conversely, if considerable damage or decay have caused you to lose a substantial portion of your tooth, Dr. Barkhordar will use specialized materials to reinforce the tooth to prepare for the placement of the crown.
Once your tooth has been adequately reshaped, Dr. Barkhordar will take a dental impression so your custom crown can be created. If you’re having a porcelain crown placed, Dr. Barkhordar will take special care to select a shade that perfectly matches your surrounding teeth. The entire process of having your custom crown made usually takes between two and three weeks. In the meantime, Dr. Barkhordar will place a temporary acrylic crown over the tooth to protect it from damage.
Once your crown is created, you will return to our Carson office for your second visit to have it placed. At this time, Dr. Barkhordar will numb the tooth and place the crown using permanent dental cement – unveiling your perfectly restored smile.
Caring for your dental crown
In general, your crown won’t require much special care. However, it’s important to remember that it’s not immune to tooth decay or gum disease. As such, good oral hygiene will continue to be important. You should brush twice a day, floss once a day and visit our Carson office for routine checkups every six months. To prevent the crown from breaking, you should avoid grinding your teeth, biting your nails, chewing ice and other similar habits. If you follow these guidelines, you can expect your crown to endure for up to fifteen years.
