Omid Barkhordar, DDS
Pediatric dentistry involves working with infants, children and teens. It requires the dentist to understand how to motivate younger patients to maintain their oral health and care for their teeth throughout their lives.
Why is a good pediatric dentist important?
It’s critical that families have access to a kind and compassionate pediatric dentist like Dr. Omid Barkhordar. Many children associate the dentist with pain and fear – and that causes their visits to be stressful and upsetting for everyone involved. These fears may even prevent them from taking proper care of their teeth, putting their oral health at risk.
But a good pediatric dentist can calm your child’s fears about the dentist and ensure that every visit is a fun and enjoyable experience. In this way, your child learns over time that visiting the dentist isn’t something to be feared – it’s something to look forward to!
Your child’s first dental visit
Your child should visit the dentist by their first birthday – or within six months of receiving their first tooth. This first visit will be completely comfortable and won’t involve much treatment. It’s primarily done to check for any issues, discuss your child’s oral health moving forward and allow your child to get used to visiting the dentist.
During the exam, you will sit in the treatment chair and hold your child while Dr. Barkhordar examines your child’s teeth and gums. During this process, he’s looking for signs of decay, bite problems and any issues that affect the gums and jaw. If it’s necessary, one of our hygienists will gently clean any teeth, and you and Dr. Barkhordar will discuss ways to care for your child’s oral health. He will also answer any questions you have regarding teething, thumb sucking, bad oral habits and nutrition.
After your first visit, Dr. Barkhordar will want to see your child every six months for a checkup. This will allow him to treat any issues early, before they develop into serious problems. These early treatments are important, because they can often prevent more complex procedures from being necessary down the road.
Your child’s dental care through the years
Your child’s dental care will evolve as she grows older. When she’s five or six years old, Dr. Barkhordar will take her first set of dental x-rays. These images will allow him to check for signs of tooth decay, cavities and any problems with the way the adult teeth are growing into the jaw.
Between years six and twelve, your child’s baby teeth will fall out and her permanent teeth will erupt through the gums. Once the permanent teeth are in place, Dr. Barkhordar will likely recommend placing a sealant over the molars. This will keep bacteria and debris away, and prevent decay and cavities. He will also suggest scheduling her first orthodontic evaluation. This examination can identify protruding teeth, a crossbite and crowding issues well in advance, so they can be resolved before a comprehensive orthodontic treatment is required.
