Omid Barkhordar, DDS
Periodontics is an advanced field of dentistry that focuses exclusively on diagnosing and treating gum disease. Dr. Barkhordar is proud to offer state-of-the-art treatments for this extremely common condition – so you can eliminate your infection and restore your optimal oral health.
What is gum disease?
Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is a serious infection that affects the delicate gum tissue. It develops when plaque and tarter are not removed through routine brushing and flossing, allowing these elements to damage your teeth and gums. If you suffer from gum disease, you are likely to experience a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, including red and tender gums, bleeding gums, receding gums, bad breath, mouth sores, loose teeth and bite changes.
The mildest form of gum disease is known as gingivitis. It causes inflamed and irritated gums and precedes a full-blown infection. However, during this stage no permanent tissue damage or bone loss has yet occurred, so it’s highly reversible. With that said, it’s important to treat gingivitis right away, as it will progress to periodontitis eventually. Periodontitis is the most severe stage of gum disease and can lead to permanent damage and tooth loss if left untreated.
Gum disease treatment
Dr. Omid Barkhordar offers the full range of gum disease treatments in his Carson office. During your initial consultation, he will carefully examine your gums and symptoms, before making a personalized recommendation regarding which procedure or custom blend of treatments will most effectively resolve your condition.
One of the most commonly used treatments for gum disease is known as scaling and root planing. It’s an extremely effective non-surgical treatment that involves deeply cleaning and removing tartar from the gums and teeth. In this way, it stops the disease from progressing and gives your gums the chance to heal. To perform this treatment, Dr. Barkhordar will numb your gums with a local anesthetic before using an ultrasonic tool to clean out any harmful elements. If your gum disease is more severe, you will likely require more than one scaling and root planing session to completely eliminate the infection.
If you have severe gum disease and have lost bone to the infection, there’s a strong chance that you’ll require bone grafting, which is a more aggressive procedure. It involves using fragments of your own bone, donated bone or synthetic bone to replace the structure you’ve lost to the disease. Once these grafts are in place, they promote the growth of new bone and restore stability to your teeth.
And finally, if your gums are receding due to periodontal disease, Dr. Barkhordar may recommend soft tissue grafting. In this case, he will take tissue from the roof of your mouth and use it to reinforce your gums and fill in areas that are receding. This procedure will prevent your condition from worsening, fix any sensitivity and restore your beautiful smile. It’s important to know that the procedure itself is quite comfortable due to an anesthetic, but you will likely experience some pain as you heal. However, Dr. Barkhordar will make sure you have medication that can help you manage any discomfort.
