If your teeth are stained or damaged and nothing else has worked to repair them or improve how they look, you may be a good candidate for veneers. These hard, thin shells, made from a resin containing composite or porcelain, are bonded to the front of your teeth. Whether you get composite veneers or porcelain veneers, it may be time to visit Care Dental Center where Dr. Omid Barkhordar can help you get the smile you deserve.
What Problems Do Veneers Fix?
Some of the problems that veneers can fix include:
- Too much space between teeth
- Misshapen teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Teeth with permanent or deep stains
- Teeth with fillings you don’t want seen
Porcelain Versus Composite Veneers
It takes a minimum of two dental appointments to apply porcelain veneers. Porcelain is stronger, lasts longer and does not change color or stain. They are translucent, just like natural teeth. It’s almost impossible to detect a porcelain veneer from a natural tooth.
Composite resin veneers, on the other hand, can be applied in just one visit. They are less expensive than porcelain veneers and are faster and easier to create. They are a more conservative approach to changing the appearance of teeth that are stained, chipped, crooked, etc.
Procedure for Porcelain Veneers
You will be given a local anesthetic to freeze the area where the work will be done. Next, Dr. Barkhordar will remove a thin layer of enamel from your teeth so that the veneers can be applied. A mold is then taken of your teeth to create a fully customized mold, allowing you to receive some of the highest quality veeners available.
Temporary veneers may be placed over the area where the enamel was removed, but not always. It depends on how much of the natural tooth had to be removed to make room for the veneer. Temporary veneers are also very fragile and can come loose, so you must be careful until you receive the permanent veneers.
When your custom veneers are ready to be installed, a final color check will be done as well as seeing that the fit and the shape are correct. If any changes are needed, they can be done at that time. Once you approve all the details, a mild chemical will be placed on your teeth to ensure better adhesion. The veneers are then attached with composite resin cement to your teeth, one at a time.
Who is a Good Candidate for Veneers?
Not every person should have veneers done for several reasons:
- If your tooth does not have much enamel, the veneer may not be able to stick to it.
- If a tooth has decay or if you have gum disease, the tooth will first need to be filled and the gum disease treated before a veneer can be fitted.
- If a person has bruxism and grinds or clenches their teeth, then porcelain veneers could be chipped or broken in the process.
Important Things You Should Know About Veneers
Once the veneers have been attached to your teeth, they are considered permanent because the enamel has been reduced from the tooth surface to make room for your veneers. However, it’s possible your veneers can become chipped if you eat foods that are hard, tough, or chewy. This includes things such as ice, nuts, and fingernails. If a veneer peels or is chipped, or you have a cavity under the veneer, it will have to be redone.
You must care for teeth with veneers just as you would your natural teeth, which includes flossing and brushing them every day. It’s a good idea to check with your insurance company to see if veneers are covered by your dental plan before you have them done.
