Root Canal

In some cases, tooth decay becomes so severe that it reaches the pulp and nerve of the tooth. When this occurs, it results in an infection that must be addressed with a root canal in order to save the tooth.

Do you need a root canal?

There are several signs that your tooth decay has become so severe that a root canal is necessary. The most common symptoms include a severe toothache, a pimple on the gums, sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, a darkening of the affected tooth and swollen and tender gums. With that said, the only way to be certain a root canal is necessary is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Barkhordar, so he can examine your teeth, evaluate your symptoms and provide a definitive diagnosis.

Additionally, it’s also possible that your tooth requires a root canal but you’re not experiencing any symptoms. It’s important to note that being free of pain and symptoms does not necessarily mean your teeth are healthy, so it’s very important to visit our Carson office regularly for checkups.

What to expect during your root canal

Before Dr. Barkhordar can perform your root canal, you’ll need to visit our Carson office for an initial appointment. During that first meeting, Dr. Barkhordar will collect x-rays of your teeth so he can identify the severity, location and extent of the infection. These images will allow him to compose a custom treatment plan to completely resolve the issue.

After your initial appointment, Dr. Barkhordar will schedule your procedure. To begin your root canal, he will apply a local anesthetic to numb your tooth and prevent you from experiencing any pain or discomfort. He will also place rubber around the tooth to prevent moisture from affecting the procedure. He will then drill a hole into the infected tooth, removing the bacteria, decay and pulp using a special root canal file. Once the infection has been eliminated, he will inject a liquid into the tooth to clear away any debris.

Once the infection has been eradicated, your tooth needs to be sealed. In most cases, this will occur the very same day, with Dr. Barkhordar placing a rubber compound and sealer paste inside the root canal, before filling the access hole with a tooth-colored composite filling. However, this process may be postponed if you are suffering from an active infection. In that case, Dr. Barkhordar will place medication and a temporary filling inside the tooth to resolve the disease. Once the infection has been treated, he will then schedule another appointment to seal the tooth.

Once your tooth is sealed, there’s a strong chance that you’ll need a restorative procedure. Because root canals involve severe decay, it’s often necessary to place crowns and other restorations to protect the tooth, prevent breakage and ensure the structure functions optimally. Dr. Barkhordar will discuss all of these treatment options with you before scheduling an appointment to have them performed.

Your recovery

Once your root canal is complete, you can expect to experience profound relief from the pain and symptoms that were caused by the infection. However, those effects may be replaced with some sensitivity due to lingering inflammation from the procedure. You should be able to manage it fairly easily with over-the-counter medication until it disappears. In general, you should rest at home immediately after the procedure, but you’ll be able to resume work and your normal daily routine the very next day.
