Omid Barkhordar, DDS
Dr. Barkhordar is proud to provide his patients with access to sedation dentistry. These treatments involve using sedation to reduce your level of consciousness and ease anxiety, so your entire experience is as comfortable as possible.
What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is an excellent way to manage any fears and anxiety you may have about going to the dentist. Through the use of sedative agents that reduce your consciousness to varying levels, sedation dentistry allows you to be comfortable and relaxed during the procedure. You’ll simply relax in the chair as Dr. Barkhordar fixes your chipped tooth, restores your gums or replaces your crowns – making it a completely pleasant experience.
Do I Need sedation Dentistry?
If you have a low pain threshold, or great anxiety about dental treatments, sedation dentistry might be the solution you need. It is also indicated for those who have a gag reflex that gets in the way of treatment, highly sensitive teeth, or need extensive dental work in one appointment. Those who have fear of needles and shots can also benefit from our sedation dental treatment. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Barkhordar and find out more about our sedation process and find out if it is right for you. Your dental and medical history must be reviewed, and our focus will be on finding the perfect method to treat your dental problem.
Is Sedation dentistry right for me?
Sedation dentistry can be a terrific solution for many patients. It’s especially ideal for individuals who have a low threshold for pain, are fearful of going to the dentist, have a poor gag reflex, have highly sensitive teeth, are having a large amount of dental work performed and/or are afraid of needles. In all of these cases, sedation dentistry can help you manage your fears and discomfort so you can receive the dental work you need. With that said, the only way to know for sure if you’re a candidate is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Barkhordar today, so he can review your history and dental problems to help you determine if sedation dentistry is in your best interest.
Types of dental sedation
Dr. Barkhordar offers a number of different types of dental sedation in his Carson office, based on your anxiety levels and the dental work you’re having performed. Of them all, the most common type is known as inhaled sedation. With this option, a mask will be placed over your nose and you’ll inhale nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” to help you relax. The primary benefit of this option is that it wears off quite quickly, so you’re able to drive home after treatment.
Another common form of sedation is oral sedation. With oral sedation, you’ll be given a special pill that causes you to become drowsy. The pills come in varying strengths, depending on the work you’re having done. For example, you’ll either be completely relaxed but awake (minimally sedated) or you’ll be considerably groggy and you won’t be able to remember the procedure (moderately sedated.)
The third type of sedation is IV sedation. With this option, Dr. Barkhordar will administer the medication through a vein. It will make you groggy very quickly and is typically used for longer procedures. It’s a great choice because Dr. Barkhordar can control how much medication you receive, so he can easily customize the level of sedation to fit your needs.
And finally, the last form of sedation is known as deep sedation. With this type, you’ll be almost unconscious or completely unconscious throughout the entire procedure. In fact, this medication is so strong that you won’t wake up until it wears off or Dr. Barkhordar reverses its effects.
