Wisdom Tooth Removal
Your wisdom teeth are four molars that emerge in the back of your mouth when you’re between 17 and 21 years of age. If your jaw is unable to accommodate these new teeth, they will need to be extracted to prevent aesthetic and functional problems from developing.
Reasons for wisdom tooth removal
There are many reasons your wisdom teeth may need to be removed. In general, if they are causing or are expected to cause problems with your gums, sinuses or other teeth, you’ll need to have them extracted. With that said, here are the most common problems that warrant the removal of your wisdom teeth:
Crooked wisdom teeth
If your wisdom teeth grow in at a crooked angle, they can cause pain, crowding issues and damage to the adjacent teeth. When this occurs, they need to be removed.
In some cases, your wisdom teeth may create sinus problems where there previously were none, leading to congestion, pain and pressure. In these cases, removing the wisdom teeth can also solve your sinus problems.
Impacted wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth are impacted when they don’t completely emerge through the gums. Untreated impacted wisdom teeth can lead to a serious infection and other complications, so they need to be removed promptly.
In many cases, wisdom teeth may lead to problems with the gums as well, causing them to swell and harden. When this occurs, they need to be extracted to preserve your oral health.
If there’s no space for your wisdom teeth, they can cause crowding issues and undo the results of prior dental work, such as braces or crowns. In these cases, removing the wisdom teeth will protect your investment and preserve your beautiful smile.
What to expect during the procedure
Throughout the removal of your wisdom teeth in our Carson office, you will be completely sedated. In this state, you won’t feel any pain and you likely won’t remember much of the experience.
To begin, Dr. Barkhordar will create precise incisions in the gum tissue, before cutting away any bone that’s covering your wisdom teeth. He will then expertly remove the tissue connecting your wisdom teeth to the bone, before extracting the entire tooth. If Dr. Barkhordar is unable to extract the tooth in one full piece, he will break it into tiny pieces for the removal. In either case, he will end the procedure by closing the incisions with self-dissolving sutures and inserting gauze to minimize bleeding.
Your recovery is a critical part of having your wisdom teeth removed, so you’ll need to give yourself ample time to heal. For the first several days, you’ll want to rest in bed and stay home from work or school. Because the area will be quite sore, it’s also important to adopt a temporary soft-food diet, mainly eating items like pudding, mashed potatoes, yogurt and soup. Most patients are pretty swollen after the procedure, but you can apply ice regularly to control these effects.
A very important aspect of your recovery involves protecting the blood clot that has formed in the empty sockets to encourage healing. To accomplish this, you will want to avoid smoking, using straws, spitting forcefully and rinsing your mouth, as these activities are very likely to disrupt the clot and lead to serious complications.
